چکیده

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been used with increasing frequency over the last 16 years, albeit still experimentally. Data is available from the International Bone Marrow Transplant Registry (IBMTR) totaling more than 300 transplant recipients by 2008(1). In 2009, a Consensus Meeting was held to review available evidence on the subject of autoimmune diseases(2). The procedure has improved and the incidence of complications and mortality decreased over time. There are still many points of discussion, some of which should be clarified by ongoing randomized studies. This consensus paper aims to gather data available in the international literature and to compare it to the Brazilian experience in order to establish evidence-based recommendations for the application of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in the treatments of systemic and multiple sclerosis in Brazil.

Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) has been recognized as a common neurodegenerative disease that occurs after an Auto reactive T cells against myelin antigens.  Demyelination and inflammation are the main features of this disease. The anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective roles of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) have been considered as a suitable tre...

Feasibility and toxicity of hematopoietic stem cell transplant in multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a debilitating disease of the central nervous system. It affects people of all ages but is more prevalent among 20-40 year olds. Patients with MS can be presented with potentially any neurological symptom depending on the location of the lesion. A quarter of patients with MS suffer from bilateral lower limb spasticity among other symptoms. These devastating effects can be ...

The Role of Stem Cell Therapy in Multiple Sclerosis: an Overview of the Current Status of the Clinical Studies

The complexity of multiple sclerosis (MS) and the incompetence of a large number of promise treatments in MS urge us to plan new and more effective therapeutic approaches that aim to suppress ongoing autoimmune responses and induction of local endogenous regeneration. Emerging data propose that hematopoietic, mesenchymal and neural stem cells have the potential to restore self-tolerance, to pro...

The use of stem cells for the treatment of autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune diseases constitute a heterogeneous group of conditions commonly treated with anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressant and immunomodulating drugs, with satisfactory results in most cases. Nevertheless, some patients become resistant to conventional therapy. The use of high doses of drugs in such cases results in the need for bone marrow reconstitution, a situation which has stimulated re...
